there's another (better) definition of "ribbon clerk" in bruce roger's excellent THE QUEEN'S VERNACULAR, in which a ribbon clerk is definfined as a queen who works a retail job; thus: "oh don't mind raymonda, she's just on the rag because her favorite ribbon clerk from bendel's snubbed her at the mineshaft last night..."
A "ribbon clerk" is a less common term for a woman who spends most of her time with gay men, also known as a fag hag.
