Curves Fitness Supports the American Family Association

Curves is the largest fitness franchise in the world and has more than 10,000 locations in over 60 countries.

Operated by Curves franchisees, Curves was the first fitness and weight-loss facility designed especially for women.

The company is also the owner of Diane Magazine, that features inspirational stories, fitness and nutrition information, success stories, recipes, and celebrity interviews. Special issues tackle topics like eating disorders and domestic violence.

On the American Family Radio website there is a banner proudly proclaiming the partnership between the American Family Association's American Famlly Radio Network and Curve's predominately displayed on the AFR webpage.

Demand that Curves drop their sponsorship and association with the anti-gay hate group known as the AFA.

They are also staunchly anti-choice.

Well, now I'm even more glad that I'm not a member of Curves.

This is old news...I was suspicious of that place for so long, I finally looked it up, thinking it was some kind of cult. Before long, I was on their website selling "work-out CDs" and guess what folks? It was all evangelical crap. Those Curves people are trying to brainwash the world.

I test-drove one in Orlando, and they had women working out to Christian music (pop with "is that Jesus or her boyfriend?" lyrics.) It was not an aberration.

FranchisePick.com has many Curves owners and execs as readers. I've crossposted your story here, and invite your comments. Please invite others to comment as well.

Wow thanks for letting me know that this gym supports true American values and better yet not only woman's health but also the protection of traditional marriages. I am seriously considering canceling my current gym membership and switching to Curves so I can support corporations that try to better the lives of woman, families and all American citizens. I am proud of this company for standing for truth and not letting the far left crowd bully them around. Bravo Curves you will very shortly have my money.

Anonymous thank you, every time a conservative comes on the site, I engage in sodomy. Post more, so I can engage in more gay sex.

Queers United: Are they?
I have a pretty high traffic blog in the franchise industry. One post on Curves has more than 500 comments.
I posted several stories on the AFA coercing franchise companies including their successful "boycott" of McDonald's for supporting a gay pride parade and their alliance with 10,000 unit Curves.
In both cases, I invited commenters on sites like this one to leave their opinions. I linked to your site and other gay blogs. I emailed invitations to comment.
No one bothered, except AFA supporters... I linked to your story and left a comment and a link. Even you didn't bother.
I think the Prop 8 vote was very unfortunate, but I'm less and less surprised. Queers don't seem to be as united as the groups that oppose them.
Here are recent posts where no gays even bothered to comment.

Franchise I appreciate your invitation but again I think this is a corporate issue, and not an individual franchisee one, sure it would help if franchisees campaign for us as well, but given the comments on your blog that is unlikely.

OH!! I am so bummed to read this! Curves is my low impact option to make sure that I keep moving at least 3 times a week. I am so disappointed when companies have to go in a direction that excluded many who they need as customers! I'm going to look into this more.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention!!

Thanks for letting us know about the connection. I've just told my fellow PFLAG members about Curves.

This sucks!! As a lesbian owner of a Curves franchise, I have to say that I am shocked that a community that constantly gets prejudged would prejudge themselves!! The founders are religous. The clubs are individually owned and there own opinions are not a reflection of the founders. By posts like this you are damaging the small business of individuals - not damaging a large empire!

Anon I would urge you as a franchise owner to speak up and let the headquarters know how appalled you are at what they are doing.

You are completely missing my point! I get to help many people with my club and am a huge source of community support. My members are aware that my opinion is not that of some other person's. They know and adore my partner and assist in our endeavours to make a difference within our own community! Why don't you understand that this sort of hatred perpetuates and strenthens the bad behaviour of others. If we don't give it fuel - there cannot be a fire! We do not like to people doing damage to us and affecting our lives - so why is it acceptable for us as a community to do so to others?

I believe that I run my centre in a way that shows that other people's ignorance is not reflected in my own behaviour! Unfortunately, some owners believe that their personal religious opinions give them the right to judge others. I am a bigger person than them and the growth in my club and the trust that my members have in me proves this! Many of my members are passionately religious and yet do not partake in judging and I personally would not advertise through a forum such as some owners have chosen to. BTW, I have advertised regularly in gay print (not a choice of the Founder of Curves, I am sure) - but it is where I have chosen to spend my advertising dollars. Some owners of some fitness centres (and they happen to be 'Curves', they could have been any other fitness centre)have made this choice - but NOT the majority.

Remember, your comments have the power to sway people's opinion and destroy someone's small business. Words can be mighter than the sword - do independent owners deserve to lose their livelihood and their ability to help many people that otherwise would not do anything to improve their health?

This issue was just brought to my attention by my lesbian (birth) sister. I am considering canceling my membership but plan to talk to the franchise owner first to see if she has taken a stand within the organization (kinda doubt it). Thank you for the information.

It's not the individual clubs that are anti-gay. It's the founder. Had many of us known his views, we probably wouldn't have bought our clubs. They have no right to use the money we make them to support these groups.
