The California Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional to deny gays and lesbians equal marriage rights. Gay.com Breaking News Headline!

This is a huge landmark for Queer civil rights in America and throughout the world! California courts are highly respected and set a national gold standard.

The battle still continues as this will now energize anti-gay activists to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage, equality activists will have to battle these efforts. But, let us rejoice for now and let the party begin!

California Legalizes Gay Marriage!

Is not exactly correct.

Stricking down the state's ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional does not automatically legalize gay marriage.

There is still work to be done.

Queers United said...

David you are right that more work needs to be done, right-wing groups have collected 1.1 million signatures to have an amendment to make marriage the union of one man and one woman, which will likely be on the ballot this November.

That being said for now gay marriage is legal, and counties have to decide how soon couples can marry and to change forms. We should see in the next couple of weeks, probably within the next 30 days couples lining up at courthouses.

Love your blog!

I posted some thoughts on how this ruling may affect other states like mine, Wyoming, the so-called Equality State.

Thanks Mary and I certainly hope equality is acheieved in Wyoming and beyond soon.

On a sidenote I posted a new video from MSNBC on the marriage coverage. Is it just me or is the anti-marriage guy creepy looking, I bet he has some skeletons in his closet.

"Gay" marriage? What about bi people who want to marry someone of the same sex? Yeah, I know it's same-sex marriage. But it keeps being referred to as "gay". And while I'm totally stoked about the news, the term "gay marriage" makes me feel pretty damn excluded.

I hear you out. I use the terms interchangeably. It is hard to be too pc within the LGBT spectrum so I kind of just go back and forth with a bunch of terms. I personally don't love the term Same-Sex Marriage because I think our opponents focus just on the "sex" word and even though it references biological sex people think of our relationships purely on sexual terms. I guess the best thing is to say marriage equality.

I'm glad that I live in Texas and we won't be allowing homosexuals getting married in my lifetime!

this is such a great ruling! My partner and I are just thrilled!

Hey Gretchen,
Are you are your partner from Cali? It is exciting news for us all, but certainly more so if from the Golden State.

This is wonderful news. I was watching clips and it is so wonderful to see LGBT people getting married. I can't get in on this because my wife and I went to Canada and mrried last year--got tired of the whole marry-go-round of states OKing same sex marriage, only to have the homophobes find a way to strike it down.

Prestyourjet is right-it is a SHAME that we have to eep fighting the same battle over and over and over again!
