Prominent Mormons Reimbursed for Prop 8

In what is now being called Mormon Gate by Californians Against Hate, the LDS church finds itself embroilled in a new scandal every day over their social, and financial involvement in banning same-sex marriage in California.

All this may be the tip of the iceberg as new reports indicate the following people, and probably more to follow were allegedly reimbursed by the yes on 8 campaign.

  • Lawrence Research (Gary Lawrence, Mormon pollster and Meridian contributor): $528,877.35
  • Eagle Foundation (a Mormon PAC set up by Bart Marcois and David Parker): $135,912.76
  • Glen Greener (former Salt Lake City Police Commissioner, Meridian contributor, and now a GOP operative and sometime Cali property developer): $50,236.42
  • Sonja Brown (Protectmarriage.com communications director): $41,844.00
  • Zion Multimedia Corp.: $2,000.00
  • Rob Wirthlin: $768.18
The full list of those who contributed to the Yes on 8 campaign can be viewed here courtesy of California's public records law.

H/T to Eric Ethington.

Wirthlin? As in one of the Worthless Wirthlins?

Robb is a slimeball. No doubt about that.

I don't mean to be the grammar or spelling police, but I think you mean "Prominent."

Thank you for the correction.

The Mormon Church of H8. They have made it their religious code to hate gays and lesbians. They excommunicate their gay and lesbian members. They preach H8 against our communities with no remorse or no regret. The evil and insidious campaign against the civil rights of gays and lesbians to marry is sickening. I really really hope that they get what is coming their way. Karma happens. Shit happens. Stand up for you rights ladies and gentlemen. Tell the Mormon Church about their H8. Let their missionaries know how we feel about their cult. It is time they are stopped, being fined, and help accountable under the law. TAX the Mormon church NOW and use the funds for gay and lesbian programs and services.

Utah's ABC4 did a two-day running segment on Mormongate. Fred, as usual, did great, but it's also gratifying to see a local Utah station covering this story:

Mormongate: LDS Church responds to FPPC investigation with last-minute reporting of Prop 8 donations:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktFi_tCS0fM

Mormongate: New questions emerge about LDS Church Prop 8 contributions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40n04elgqJA

In the second vid, watch as Chris Vanocur (the local reporter) slips into high dudgeon over the discrepancies ... cracked me up.

If you H8 Mormons, does that mean you have to fight against yourself too?

How can these people donate so much money toward taking away minority rights while it could have been used for such good to help the homeless, hungry, sick, etc? I hope prop 8 is overturned so these buttheads will really feel it where is hurts the most. Sick, hateful people.

Eric Ethington’s weblog has pulled and deleted this post. Seems that it is innaccurate and the source of a false rumor. Let's not be so quick to believe everything we read.

The only mistake is characterizing the below payments as coming from the LDS church, when they in fact came from the Prop 8 campaign (and are listed publicly at the CA SOS website):

* Lawrence Research (Gary Lawrence, Mormon pollster and Meridian contributor): $528,877.35

* Eagle Foundation (a Mormon PAC set up by Bart Marcois and David Parker): $135,912.76

* Glen Greener (former Salt Lake City Police Commissioner, Meridian contributor, and now a GOP operative and sometime Cali property developer): $50,236.42

* Sonja Brown (Protectmarriage.com communications director): $41,844.00

* Zion Multimedia Corp.: $2,000.00

* Robb Wirthlin: $768.18

The only other issue is that these disbursements aren't really part of the "Mormongate" story (which has to do with under-reporting of campaign contributions by the LDS church).

The fact remains that rank-and-file Mormons gave generously to the Yes on 8 campaign, while professional Mormon flacks profited handsomely from the same campaign.

In any case, the latest Mormongate update is available here:

In response to L. Stephen's comment, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not preach hate against people. In the official news release from the Church about marriage and Proposition 8, it says, "Protecting marriage between a man and a woman does not affect Church members’ Christian obligations of love, kindness and humanity toward all people" (http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/commentary/the-divine-institution-of-marriage). Despite the actions or words of members of the Church that may have led you to your conclusion, they do not represent the Church's beliefs, which includes Christ's statement that we should love our neighbor's as ourselves (Matthew 22:39).

Brother Glen Greener is now living in Salt Lake City with his new wife which he had on going adulterous affair with for over 34 years. Talk about a hypocrite.

Glen Greener is anti-gay and pro marriage. I am not a mormon but I met Mr . Geener at a 7-eleven years ago. He was drunk and disoriented. I offered him some money and he just said "f-off bitch". I have recognized him in the internet and I can assure you I will nnever pursue the morman "Church".

a transient. I offered him some money at a 7-Eleven to help him get home and he just stared blankly at me and told me to f-off.
