The Washington D.C. city council has finalized a bill legalizing same-sex marriage by a vote of 11-2. The two councilmembers who opposed the measure were Marion Barry, and Yvette Alexander.
The bill now goes to Mayor Adrian Fenty who has promised to sign the bill into law. Following that congress has 30 days to veto the bill, but the Democratic majority is likely not to interfere with the districts ruling.
Washington D.C. joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Vermont in affirming their LGBT residents right to marriage.

One state at a time....Keep the train a chuggin! Congratulations DC!
Holla!
It is nice to finally see a vote go our way for a change.
ok...another state.
That's fantastic news! I think that it's especially good news because the decision was made by (a very large majority) in a legislative body rather than by a court.
My concern is that the victory will be short lived. I don't see any way for this not to go on a referendum before the people, who will vote it down.
Even if it does DC is quite liberal! The only republicans in DC are in the house and senate! LOL
WOOO HOOO!!!!!
Even if it does go to a referendum, it's still one small victory at a time when we really need some good news for a change. Sure wish some of that progressive thinking would spread to us in Texas!
Yeah D.C, we need to have the other states follow suit that haven't.
Just in time for my partner to leave me after 13 years and find 2 new girlfriends b4 going trans.
Hopefully others won't feel like it passed them by. Don't wait, anything can happen.
Sooo hoping for the best for Washington... we just suffered a low blow here in Maine!
YEAH for DC! WOOT!
Marion Barry opposed it?! What -- not enough cocaine and whores involved for his liking?
