Joy Behar Makes Unfair Generalization about Gay Relationships

Joy Behar of ABC's The View and her own show on HLN called The Joy Behar Show has been an ardent straight ally on behalf of the LGBT community but is coming under criticism for generalizations about gay male relationships.

In a segment on The View she argues that gays take monogamy less seriously, and that it is permissible for gay men to have affairs. She maintains that the straight world is more inclined to break up a relationship where one partner goes astray while the gay community is more accepting of such behavior.

The gay community much like the straight community has a variety of viewpoints when it comes to the issue of monogamy. There are gays and straights who are polyamorous and have multiple partners, and there are many who regard monogamy as right for them. To assert a blanket statement for the entire community is plain misinformation and wrong to those millions of LGBT people who do practice monogamy.

ABC's Good Morning America Boots Adam Lambert

The ABC networks Good Morning America has canceled a scheduled concert by performer Adam Lambert citing his "controversial" behavior at the American Music Awards this past weekend where he engaged in homoerotic behavior as part of his show.

A spokesperson for ABC said:

"Given his controversial American Music Awards performance, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning."

Twitter is up in a storm with hashtags #GMAfail and #ShameOnYouAbc trending.

Double Standard on Adam Lambert's Display of Sexuality

On ABC's The View American Idol runner up singer Adam Lambert's display at the American Music Award's was the subject of heated discussion. Typically, more conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck takes issue with Lambert's "sexual aggression" and Sherri Sheperd says "she wasn't pleased" with the AMA "lesbian kiss" between Madonna and Britney Spears either.

There is no doubt that Adam Lambert wanted to be edgy by appearing on stage with a man on a leash, receiving mock oral sex, and making out with a man on live TV but he is being singled out by some in the media for this behavior. The reaction is testament to the fact that Americans are still very uncomfortable with overt sexuality and non-heteronormative behavior being displayed.

Tell Hasselbeck and Sheperd not to single out Adam Lambert or gay behavior in general, he didn't do anything wrong, he is an artist, and many heterosexuals have been equally if not more overt about their sexuality, but weren't singled out because heterosexuality is the norm in our society.

Open Forum: Is Homophobia So Gay?

ABC Network did a little test to see how people would react with a gay couple in a New Jersey sports bar. The scenario was set so the actors, a gay couple would display affection, a straight couple would do the same thing, and one man who was homophobic would react to what he saw.

The results of the video were interesting. Does this indicate that people maintain prejudiced attitudes but that society at large feels it is unacceptable to publicly display these prejudices? Has homophobia become unpopular, and been replaced by the call for tolerance by most sectors in society?

ESPN - Your Destination for Homophobia!

2/2 UPDATE: ESPN will remove the ad, embedded below, from its site and post a statement, its Associate Director of Diversity, Stephanie Turner, told GLAAD's Sports Media program Monday afternoon.(PageOneQ)

2/1: ESPN has released a new commercial advertising a website that is being billed as the destination for information on the NBA. The site provides information on their 'NBA on ESPN RV Tour' a promotion for ABC and ESPN and scheduling for upcoming basketball games.

They have released this new commercial in which Shaquille O'Neal finds the homo insinuation of a "fist kiss" to be "weird & disgusting." He goes on to make fun of the suggestion, in an effeminate voice.

Networks like ESPN, ABC, and stars like Shaquille O'Neal should be held to a higher standard. Millions of young people look to these shows, and celebrities as role models and for their guidelines. Commercials like these perpetuate fear of homosexuality and continue a condemnation of gayness and gender expression.

Voice your concern by calling on ESPN/ABC to remove this offensive commercial immediately.

Sherri Shepherd "Struggles" With Whether LGBT People Deserve Equal Rights

11/10 Update: Thanks to your activism and the activism of GLAAD and Ellen DeGeneres the show was held accountable for the outright lies spread by Sherri Shepherd on prop 8. Also, one thing that keeps irritating me is that this show is supposed to be informative. They talked about the gay adoption ban, in the last program they said they thought it was in Nebraska, well on today's program they said that as if it were factual. The adoption ban was in Arkansas, if you want people to take the show seriously, get the facts straight. I wish Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck would keep their religious viewpoint out of the political debate on civil rights.

H/T to Good As You for the video.

11/8 Sherri Shepherd one of the co-hosts of "The View" of ABC spread a lot of misinformation about marriage equality and prop 8. She talks of her "pastor possibly being jailed" for speaking against homosexuality. She also said that gay issues are something she "struggles" with because she has gay friends. She "doesn't want rights being taken away" but she says she is a "christian and believes marriage is between a man and a woman."

Contact Sherri Sheperd over her anti-gay views.

Dancing With the Gays?

The media rumors are flying that Lance Bass the openly gay singer from the pop music band N'Sync will be on the ABC hit show "Dancing with the Stars." To add to the twist, the show is considering pairing him up with a professional male dancer. This would be the first time a same-sex couple would be seen on the show dancing and would be broadcast to millions of homes across the globe.
