Open Forum: Does the Pride Flag Need a Make Over?

PRI/WYNC's Studio 360 radio show is having a design firm reconceptualize the pride flag and allowing their listeners to submit their own renditions as well. They believe the flag is old fashioned and in need of a 21st century makeover. The results air on the weekend of June 27th.

The show is sure to spark a debate among those who are loyal to the flag and those who are sick and tired of seeing rainbows abound. Some of the user submitted designs are quite funny, artistic and interesting.

What do you make of the effort to have a 21st century pride flag? Can this be something to replace the historic rainbow flag, is the notion ridiculous or are we in need of a more unison and universal complementary symbol?

Open Forum: What Does the Pride Flag Mean to You?

The pride flag is flown for a host of reasons including personal pride, political aspirations of justice, equality and peace, as well as for allies to demonstrate their acceptance and safe and affirming attitude towards sexual minorities.

The flag represents many things to many different people, and brings forth several different emotions. The colors originally were designed to symbolize: pink (sex), red (life), orange (healing), yellow (sunlight), green (nature), blue (harmony), and purple/violet (spirit). Are these an accurate description of your feelings for the flag? What do you think of when you see the flag, and what does the pride flag mean to you?
