A public memorial and candlelight vigil will be held by the Transgender Foundation of America on Monday, January 25 at 6 pm to honor Myra Ical, a trans woman whose body was found last Monday in the 4300 block of Garrott St near Richmond Avenue.
The memorial will include two moments of silence, one for Ms. Ical and another for other transgender Houstonians who have been murdered whose crimes remain unsolved, as well as a moment of noise-making to recognize that it is silence that allows the perpetrators of crime to go unpunished.
Houston Police have no leads in the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Transgender Foundation of America at 713-520-8586.

Justice for Angie Zapata
Angie Zapata an 18 year old Greeley, CO teen was murdered for being transgender. The trial for the alleged killer began today, and it is the first time gender identity has been applied to a hate crimes investigation within the state of Colorado. Her family and friends want to make sure that people who are transgender are fully accepted and protected by our society.

Transwoman Faces Danger in Canadian Prison System
Jeanniegrrl has alerted me to the case of a Quebec, Canada trans woman who is a prisoner and in possible danger due to her gender identity/expression.
"Tania Veilleux, 43, is legally a woman under Quebec law but is being held in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines federal facility because she's a male under Correctional Service of Canada rules.Ste-Anne-des-Plaines Institution
Veilleux, formerly Sylvain, is awaiting surgery to change gender, but until that happens, she is treated as a man. Nevertheless, she wants to be sent to a woman's jail.
Her safety may be at risk, said transgendered lawyer Micheline Montreuil: "I'm sure she will be harassed," and perhaps even raped by other inmates" (CBCNews).
