Word of the Gay: "Purple Rhino"

Use of the Purple Rhino dates back to the 1970's as a symbol for Gay power. The symbol never picked up steam but was chosen because the Rhino is usually a docile and often misunderstood creature but can put up a good fight if attacked. It was analogous to the fact that Gays and Lesbians are peaceful and loving but will fight back if bashed.

That's really interesting, I've never heard of that before! Rhinos are a good symbol for many reasons when you think about it.

i'm not surprised it didn't pick up...there's really nothing particularly gay about the rhino...as for being docile and putting up a good fight when provoked - that may as well go for ALL minorities.

I stick to the good 'ol green carnation..everyone can identify a rainbow nowadays

Never knew that.

It would be cool now if the rhino
was put on the rainbow flag. Up in
the corner like the stars on the
american flag.

Hugs!!

tr and laurie: i really like this symbol it is so peaceful and i like what it represents.

oren: there is nothing particularly gay about any symbol we just make them gay based on what we decide for them to be. i will def blog about the green carnation one day though. I find it fascinating how all these symbols and signs came to be.
