New York University Law School has hired a new Human Rights professor. Dr. Li-ann Thio, a professor at the National University of Singapore, will be teaching two courses during the Fall 2009 semester as a Global Visiting Professor of Law at NYU.
This professor has been outspoken against gay rights in Singapore. She argued before the parliament to keep statute 377A which criminalizes homosexual sex. She made outrageous claims such as "diversity is not a license for perversity" and "anal sex is like shoving a straw up your nose to drink". Dr. Li-Ann Thio calls "homosexuality a gender identity disorder" and a "moral wrong that cannot be compared to a human right." She supported a 15,000 dollar fine against a television station that portrayed a gay family and a child.
Students, LGBT and human rights activists are outraged at NYU's decision to bring in this controversial and homophobic woman.
She is scheduled to teach two classes: Human Rights in Asia and Constitutionalism in Asia. The classes are in jeopardy of being canceled since many students refuse to sign up.
Please sign the petition in opposition to Dr. Thio Li-Ann teaching at NYU.

Let her teach, or try to. lol It will be way funnier and powerful if she is unable to teach ebcause no one will listen OR because she quits because she faces so much confrontation in the classroom. Drop the petition. Let's let this one implode all on its own.
"anal sex is like shoving a straw up your nose to drink"
Does she know that heterosexual couples engage in anal sex ALL THE TIME??? Sex isn't about procreation all the time. It just isn't. It can and should be enjoyed. Sounds like she needs a good fucking.
Sorry to be so blunt here, but the statements made by this woman are incredibly insulting and moronic.
I agree with what Heather said, let it implode on it's own.
She has just decided back out and not to come to NYU. See http://www.thefacultylounge.org/2009/07/nyus-visiting-professor-of-homophobia-withdraws.html.

TRiG.
She should be attending human rights classes, not teaching them. She is obviously lost.
I was upset until I saw her classes were in jeopardy of being cancelled. Then I laughed, we're gaining support and I think this shows it well.
I'm so happy to see she is now backing down. This is probably NYU's polite way of not letting her come, letting her save face.
She is part of a religious area, can't say I am surprised to hear that kind of ignorance. Singapore is well known for being anti-gay, because there are a lot of christians/other religions there and it's quite near places with a lot of muslim cultures... so yeah, big surprise ;\
Singapore is also the country that banned several games for having any ( even slightly ) homosexual related scenarios in games.
