"Womyn" is an alternative spelling for woman that is used in many feminist and lesbian circles to use the word without the patriarchal connotations.

I love this term. Interestingly, I've seen it used mostly in African-American communities and/or by writers of African descent. This makes me wonder how much we know about its evolution. For example, do we know when and/or where it was first used?
