Congressman King: "If Gays Don't Advertise It, They Won't Get Discriminated Against"

Congressman Steve King (R) of Iowa has defended his position against the Employment Non Discrimination Act by saying that "If you don’t project it, if you don’t advertise it, how would anyone know to discriminate against you?" The entire segment about this can be seen in the video below. Essentially Representative King is saying that gays who "flaunt" it are bringing discrimination upon themselves, and that it's their fault. This philosophy breeds a closeted environment, and one in which only cisgender and "straight acting" individuals are safe at their workplace.

Congressman King has been no stranger to controversial remarks about the LGBT community and others. It was only a year ago that he warned that gay marriage will lead to socialism.

Okay, then don't wear your heterosexuality on your sleeve. What a clueless individual asking please don't take my rights to discriminate away.

This is ridiculous. There is a difference between "advertising" oneself and being oneself. They're not Jehovah's Witnessess trying to convert him. And as for "flaunting", if he means by being in parades or rallies, that's both a constitutional right and only a result of the goverment itself not allowing equal rights. If he means in clubs, there's no real difference there from straight people "flaunting".

Suggsting that anybody should have to conceal who they are in "straight acting" just to be considered equal is immoral, if anything, not being gay.

And as for gay marriage leading to socialism, I don't see the supposed link. This isn't about equality in economics, it's about equality in basic human rights.

He wears homophobia on his sleeve and I am dedicated to ensuring that he loses his job. It won't make up for the thousands of LGBT people who lost theirs, but at least karma will play out.

Sitting here in my wheelchair, I am far from advertising anything, yet I am discriminated against by my country. I can not marry my lover of 31 years.

Does that mean that he does not flaunt his heterosexuality? He should not have a picture of his spouse and children on his desk at work.
