Word of the Gay: "Breeder Voyeur"

"Breeder Voyeur" is a disparaging term for a heterosexual who attends a gay bar or event in order to observe queer life and culture.

Dear Queers United;

I'm not interested in a flame war so please don't take this as anything but a desire for dialogue. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your "word of the gay" series. Is the goal to simply list terms that exist out in the community? Or are you standing behind the use of these terms?

If it is the former, then I can see why you would include the term "breeder" because, yes, it's out there. However, a disclaimer showing that you, as activists and uniters, recognise that it is a hurtful and divisive term would be nice. If it is the latter...well, I'm hoping that's not the case.

You see, using the term "breeder" in reference to hetereosexual sex acts obscures that many people in the queer community *do* procreate, either because they are bisexual, or trans and hetero identified, or because they are in same-sex relationships and choose to procreate through the use of surrogates or insemination techniques. Does this somehow make us less queer?

As a bisexual with a child that I gave birth to as a result of sex with a man, before I transitioned to male, I feel hurt by the term breeder. And I also feel that it hurts our hetero allies, many of whom actually "bred" us.

If you could clarify the intent behing the post and your own position regarding the use of the term "breeder" I would much appreciate it because, I have to admit, I feel less than united with my fellow queers when that term is used, even humourously.

Thank you;
Jacky

I have stated many times that it is my intention to highlight many words some good labels, others offensive and others just funny to spread the words of the queer lingo.

Fair enough. But not everyone sees those comments unless they backtrack though the series. Would you mind pointing me in the direction of such a statement?

That said, it would still be cool if you could clarify your own position on this particular term as I don't feel my question was really answered.

Thanks!

I notice that with other clearly offensive and derogatory terms in the past month, he did label them as such.

Dear Queers United,
I love your website. it makes me feel like I am part of a community. I am a bisexual man. however I have to agree with tboyjacky on this matter. my gay friends call me breeder as a joke and some have called me a fag as a joke and the repetition of it still hasnt made it less hurtful. I like word of the day but maybe pointing out where u stand on it could help. however to side with you I can also say Im sure most people who read your website are intelligent and not the gossip reading commons.

My position is nobody should ever be degraded when it comes to their sexual orientation or gender identity and any word used to put one down is wrong in my book.

Well, then, why did you use a specifically pejorative term and not label it as such, when you have labeled other terms as such in the past?

I have edited the post to include the fact that this is disparaging.
