"No Faggots Allowed!"

Activists in Maine created this flyer to highlight the discriminatory blood ban by the American Red Cross that prohibits men who have had sex with men since 1977 or women who have had sex with a man who has had sex with a man from donating blood.

When you ask the Red Cross about it, they punt and tell you that it's the FDA's fault. I would suspect that the RC has a lot of lobbying power with the FDA, so the explanation is a bit disingenuous, but nevertheless, that's what I've seen.

Hiya GDad long time no see, good to see you! You are right, but considering they do control 45% of the blood supply I think they have a powerful voice. Ultimately the decision lies in the hands on the FDA but I wish the RC would speak up for us, not just because its politically correct but also because it needs more blood, and it should be in the business of taking as much healthy blood as possible.

Why don't we just lie? I usually lie my way right through questions about my sexual history. Because the blood is tested anyway, I don't see any reason to tell them about my sexual history or my present sexual habits. Why does everyone want to stand on the rooftops and tell the world what kind of orifice they prefer?

anonymous - it isnt about going to the blood drive and announcing your orientation, it is the fact that the forms say no males who have had sex with males. you can lie and donate and many do, but why do the forms discriminate?
