Word of the Gay: "Dyke"

"Dyke" has traditionally been an offensive term for Lesbians who are noticeably more masculine. The term can still be used in a pejorative fashion but has also been reclaimed by Lesbian activists who view the word in a positive light. The term has become a description for independent, assertive, and tough Lesbian identified females.

This was great! I remember reading in "Curve" magazine years ago that "dyke is a pejorative terms that has been reclaimed." We've chuckled ever since!

bridgeout i used to feel very uncomfortable using the word "fag" and "dyke" but I guess its just a matter of getting used to it. i now proudly refer to my female lesbian friends as Dykes and my gay males as Fags. Words are contextual in nature.
