Tell U.K. Prime Minister to Ban Queerphobic Music & Artists!

"Many artists from certain music genres seem to promote a hatred of homosexual and transsexuals in their lyrics. Urge the government to ban the sale of such material, and also ban the said artists from performing in the UK. The music is poisoning youth attitudes to LGBT people, BAN IT NOW!"

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to To ban any music or artists from performing in the UK whose lyrics promote homophobia and transphobia"

Hmmm...I'm as against homophobic lyrics as anyone, but isn't education and awareness (ah, too much time on AVEN for me ;-) a better route than censorship? Or a boycott, perhaps?

Ily I am with you on being anti-censorship big time. I think this petition speaks to music that is specifically encouraging violence against LGBT people. From what I understand that does not constitute as free speech rights if you are inciting people to go out and commit crimes.

The language of the petition is too vague and does not specify violence-inciting lyrics, merely homophobic ones. As much as I want to change attitudes, censorship is far worse. Plus it makes us look whiny.

I can understand your concern Kid A and its legitimate, I just feel after all the reggae lyrics I have seen, something must be done.

And of course there's the reggae Straight Pride march being planned in Broooklyn, NY, to defend their lyrics, so this is especially pertinent.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this "Straight Pride" parade, I wonder if there will be counter demo's. I am afraid if there are there could be bloodshed.

There might be bloodshed (if there aren't enough cops!) but it would be time for certain activist groups to show if they really mean it, or are protests just fun when you're going into St. Patrick's Cathedral to throw the Communion around and other protests against those who won't physically attack them.

anonymous - i am sure there will be a counter demo, even with cops though there could be violence. i really hope nobody gets hurt, at the same time we gotta stand up to this.
