Hah, I've always wondered about the origins of "buggery" and where exactly it came from (other than it being English). It seems so...weird and unoffensive to my American ears.
A friend of mine ran a Volkswagen repair shop in San Francisco in the 70s which was called, "The Buggery."
I know it's a off the subject but you gotta check it out.
Best DRag EVER!!

Xands: It has a long history going back to a heretical sect many centuries ago who were accused of buggery by their religious opponents.
Thank you for that, Marnanel, I should stop being lazy and look it up myself too, haha. It's always been a curious word to me.
i wonder if english queers have reclaimed the word and now call each other buggers LOL
In Australia, we say "bugger", but it means "Damn!" or something along the lines of that. I better be careful about what I say in the UK then.
preset you have given me a word of the gay idea, "poofter" soon I shall post on that lol.
I was told that the origin of this word refers to 'Bulgars' ie: Bulgarians in the belief that Bulgars were particularly prone to this 'vice'
Anonymous - You are right! Wikipedia says: "Originally, it was derived from the French word "Bouggerie" ("of Bulgaria"), meaning the medieval Bulgarian clerical sect of the Bogomils, which facing severe persecution in Bulgaria spread into Western Europe and was branded by the established church as particularly devoted to the practice of sodomy"
