Over the past five years the network CBS has refused to air commercials that feature gay advocacy or a gay theme during the Superbowl. The ads either promote a positive message, or are harmless corporate marketing ploys. They have also receiving failing grades with respect to LGBT coverage and have been show to pander to anti-gay right-wing organizations.

Five Years, Five Gay Ads Rejected by CBS

CBS Rejects Two Gay Ads for Superbowl
CBS Sports is neglecting to air two ads that have been submitted to it one for a gay dating site, the other of an effeminate black man who is likely perceived to be gay which is advertising domain registration. The company has rejected an ad from the United Church of Christ five years ago which featured a gay couple, citing that they do not allow advocacy ads. The company however has given the green light this year to an anti-abortion ad by ultra-conservative group Focus on the Family.
If the company has changed its policy to allow advocacy and controversial subjects why than are these 'gay' ads being rejected?
Ad by gay dating site ManCrunch:
Ad featuring effeminate man from Go Daddy:
Demand to know why a religious right organization can have airtime but a progressive Church, gay dating company, and a harmless ad about an effeminate man are rejected.

CBS Accepts Anti-Gay Org's Ad While Rejecting Pro-Gay Ad Five Years Ago
CBS has accepted a controversial ad from anti-gay & anti-choice Focus on the Family despite having rejected an ad five years ago from the United Church of Christ a pro-LGBT and affirming denomination to air during the Superbowl. At the time CBS said it has "a longstanding policy of not accepting advocacy advertising."
Allowing this ad to go on without allowing UCC to air their ads is hypocritical because it allows advocacy by anti-gay organizations but not by pro-LGBT Churches.

The Gays are being Gay Again...
According to The Advocate:
It appears our activism in contacting CBS has been fruitful, the threats by the anti-gay American Family Association are no longer dissuading CBS.
"As the World Turns's ban on gay kissing was apparently lifted Wednesday as characters Luke and Noah shared their first on-screen kiss after seven months of chastity.
After two passionate on-screen kisses last fall, the couple lovingly referred to by fans as "Nuke" suddenly stopped displaying their affection toward one another. Jeannie Tharrington, the producer's spokeswoman, told The Advocate, "To be frank, a lot of people weren't expecting that first kiss. We got a lot of letters -- not from activists but from regular fans who said, 'We're not ready for this.'"
Shortly after the abrupt end to their sensuous kisses, however, fans and activists mailed in bags of Hershey's kisses to CBS's studio offices in Los Angeles in protest. After letters protesting both the kisses and their absence, April 23 marked the day the passion returned."

As The World Turns. Progressive or Fearful?
The CBS show As the World Turn's made a big step in TV history by being the first show to have a continuous gay male couple cast. The couple has been seen kissing on the air twice. Since that point anti-gay activist organizations like the "American Family Association" a rightwing Christian thinktank has sent out action alerts to CBS and their sponsor Procter & Gamble. The show has now not shown much affection between the gay couple while straight couples do indeed physically engage on air.
You may ask yourself why is this an action alert, why is this important? The fact is anytime there is gay visibility the community is either making strides forward or backward pending on how the LGBTQ community is displayed in the media.
Please contact CBS and let them know that pandering to anti-gay bigots is wrong and that you want to see more of the gay couple being romantic.
