Florida Supreme Court Action Alert

Florida Supreme Court Justice Charles Wells is retiring next month, and Governor Charlie Crist (R) is in the process of selecting Wells' replacement.

Gov. Crist has already appointed several extremely conservative judges after being aggressively lobbied by the far right. And they're at it again. The ultra right-wing American Family Association has begun to rally around Judge Alan Lawson, telling their members to contact Governor Crist on Lawson's behalf. They are flooding the Governor's office with calls, faxes, and emails in support, urging him to appoint Judge Lawson immediately.

If Wells is replaced with an ultra-conservative Justice, then lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Floridians will have a difficult time being heard in court. Plus, many of the issues that we care about, such as overturning the anti-gay adoption ban, currently heading to the court, will be jeopardized.

Two Things you Can Do

1 - Click here to email the Governor. Demand that he appoint a Justice that reflects the great diversity of our state.

2 - Call Gov. Crist Today! (850) 488-7146

Counter Florida Family Associations Lies on Sordid Lives Show

The American Family Association's (AFA) Floridian chapter is trying to force advertisers to boycott the show Sordid Lives on Viacom's LGBT channel LOGO.

David Caton of the Florida Family Association issued the boycott because the show features "gender bending" and a dysfunctional Republican Baptist Texas family" According to a Florida Family release, the show depicts various members of the family as lesbian, homosexual, bi-sexual, and transgender."

One of the main stars of the show Jason Dottley responds to the allegations and calls for reverse activism:

Jason Dottley is asking us to contact the Florida Family Association over their lies and homophobia.

Queer Buycott - Campbell's Soup

The anti-gay hate group, the American Family Association has called for a boycott of Campbell's Soup over their recent ads featuring LGBT people and families.

So, in response we are calling for a buycott and are urging pro-equality consumers to praise the company for showing a commitment to diversity. Your calls, letters, and emails are needed in the face of the thousands who have called the company with disapproving words.

I re-worded the call to action sent by the AFA:

  • After sending your email, please call Campbell Soup Company (800-257-8443) and their Swanson division (1-800-442-7684) and let the company know you will continue to support them because of their gay and lesbian ads.
  • Forward this e-mail to your friends and family so they will know about Campbell's support of equality and LGBT issues.

As The World Turns. Progressive or Fearful?

The CBS show As the World Turn's made a big step in TV history by being the first show to have a continuous gay male couple cast. The couple has been seen kissing on the air twice. Since that point anti-gay activist organizations like the "American Family Association" a rightwing Christian thinktank has sent out action alerts to CBS and their sponsor Procter & Gamble. The show has now not shown much affection between the gay couple while straight couples do indeed physically engage on air.

You may ask yourself why is this an action alert, why is this important? The fact is anytime there is gay visibility the community is either making strides forward or backward pending on how the LGBTQ community is displayed in the media.

Please contact CBS and let them know that pandering to anti-gay bigots is wrong and that you want to see more of the gay couple being romantic.
