1-800-Dial Heterosexism

Dial for Men has recently come out with a slew of products for the "manly man" and question whether you are "man enough" to handle their products? This type of sexist, gender stereotypical advertising is nothing new, but Dial has also added a taste of heterosexism to the mix.

Dial's MAGNETIC body wash product promises to enhance attraction through its pheromone infused formula. Not only will it get you clean but you will also be able to get your freak on with all the ladies in town!

According to the product label:

"You don’t need the help, but it doesn’t hurt to increase your odds. Dial® for Men Magnetic™ body wash is clean rinsing and moisture rich, so you get a great clean without drying your skin, and leaves you smelling so good women can’t help but notice."
I am certain Dial meant no harm through this campaign, they are targeting men through the very obvious marketing concept that 'sex sells' Regardless of what you make of their cheesy efforts to build their brand, there is no need for this subtle heterosexism. The majority of the population is straight but many men may be attracted to this product to court a female, male, or perhaps both sexes. Dial would have been better off using gender neutral language to make the product more palatable to all consumers. After all gay/bi men are attracted to those same manly pheromones that straight/bi women like in men.

If you are so inclined, Dial can be reached for feedback through Henkel North America through their customer service form.

St. Pete's Florida Gay Pride Ads Rejected by Major Billboard Company

Clear Channel one of the largest outdoor advertisers has rejected two ads from the St. Pete's gay pride which serves the Tampa Bay, Florida LGBT community. The company has approved two current ads and has accepted ads from the organization in the past, but doesn't wish to comment on its decision to reject this set. The ads in question display a lesbian couple with the words "My Family is Free" and a gay shirtless couple saying "My Family is Fun."

Parade organizers are calling foul and suggesting that the company is rejecting the ads because it displays two same-sex couples. As a result St. Pete's Pride has pulled their other ads to make a point.

Schubert Flint Public Affairs Continues Anti-Gay Marriage Ads

Schubert Flint Public Affairs is an advertising agency that created many of the ads that helped proposition 8 pass in California, leading to same-sex marriage rights being taken away in the state.

The "National Organization for Marriage" an anti-gay think tank, is continuing their relationship with the ad agency in an attempt to further erode marriage rights for same-sex couples.

I will not give NOM the pleasure of linking to their videos but I can tell you that they are using the typical fear tactics in their messages such as:

“Legalizing gay marriage has consequences for kids.”

Another ad is backed by an unnerving repeated beep that sounds like an EKG on the fritz in an ICU. Someone could die! The ad warns that if legislators pass a marriage equality bill, soon children “will be thinking the unthinkable.”

Join The Power in telling Schubert Flint Public Affairs to stop profiting off of hate.

Queer Buycott - Campbell's Soup

The anti-gay hate group, the American Family Association has called for a boycott of Campbell's Soup over their recent ads featuring LGBT people and families.

So, in response we are calling for a buycott and are urging pro-equality consumers to praise the company for showing a commitment to diversity. Your calls, letters, and emails are needed in the face of the thousands who have called the company with disapproving words.

I re-worded the call to action sent by the AFA:

  • After sending your email, please call Campbell Soup Company (800-257-8443) and their Swanson division (1-800-442-7684) and let the company know you will continue to support them because of their gay and lesbian ads.
  • Forward this e-mail to your friends and family so they will know about Campbell's support of equality and LGBT issues.
