Anti-gay Bias on Fox News Live Poll on DADT

Conservative media giant Fox News has released a new biased and anti-gay poll on their website regarding Don't Ask Don't Tell. During the legislative debate on repeal of the military's ban on openly gay, lesbian and bisexual servicemembers there were a number of ridiculous arguments about how lifting the ban will risk national security. Fox News reinforces those absurd notions in their latest "non-scientific" poll.

Fox News asks its website visitors:

"Will Ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Affect America's Ability to Defend Itself?"

1. No -- Being gay is about someone's sexual preference, not their patriotism, acceptance of duty and their love of country.

2. Undecided -- We're in a war in Afghanistan, and I'm not sure that this is the right time to undo something that will affect our men and women in combat.

3. Yes -- At the core of an effective military is trust, and allowing a lifestyle that might cause some members of our military to feel uncomfortable cuts to the heart of that trust.

4. Other (post a comment)
Each option is negative towards the LGBT community. Either gay, lesbian and bisexual identity is a preference, it affects troop morale, or it is a lifestyle that makes others uncomfortable.

Fox News Uses "Attack of the Lesbian Prison Gangs" Scare Tactic Again!

The conservative news giant Fox News is now warning that Lindsay Lohan will face "vicious lesbian gangs" when she goes to jail. This news story titled 'Lesbian Prison Gangs Waiting to Get Hands on Lindsay Lohan, Report Says' first broke in The Sun, and as appalling as it is, atleast The Sun is a tabloid newspaper. Fox News claims to be a legitimate news organization and bills itself "fair and balanced" in their reporting. Also it should be noted that this is not the first time Fox has used the "lesbian gangs" scare tactic which made headlines nationwide until it was debunked.

In the article one inmate is quoted as saying:

"The gay inmates wear their shirts inside out to let others know they are available. So if Lindsay doesn't want someone to grab her ass she'd better keep her shirt on straight. Women grab each other like animals when the guards aren't looking. It's disgusting." (Fox News).

There are several problems with this story.
  1. How can a reporter run a story based on one account? How do we know that this person is accurate or telling the truth?
  2. Unlike the title which suggests that these gangs wish to rape Lohan, the quote by the inmate suggests that the lesbians will only approach one another if they signal they are interested by reversing their shirts.
  3. This article assumes Lindsay would not be interested in other inmates sexually. Lindsay is bisexual and could theoretically desire another female inmate for sex.
  4. Lindsay Lohan will be in solitary confinement for her protection and is unlikely to encounter other inmates.
This is just sensational news and scare tactics being used by Fox News to draw misunderstanding and hatred toward the lesbian and broader LGBT community.

St. Pete's Florida Gay Pride Ads Rejected by Major Billboard Company

Clear Channel one of the largest outdoor advertisers has rejected two ads from the St. Pete's gay pride which serves the Tampa Bay, Florida LGBT community. The company has approved two current ads and has accepted ads from the organization in the past, but doesn't wish to comment on its decision to reject this set. The ads in question display a lesbian couple with the words "My Family is Free" and a gay shirtless couple saying "My Family is Fun."

Parade organizers are calling foul and suggesting that the company is rejecting the ads because it displays two same-sex couples. As a result St. Pete's Pride has pulled their other ads to make a point.

CNN Polls Readers on Whether Gays Should Be Given Hospital Visitation Rights

The CNN homepage has a non-scientific poll up asking visitors 'What they think of President Obama's order to allow hospital visitation rights for gay and lesbian partners?' Thankfully the vast majority of the hundreds of thousands who answered have sided with basic fairness and only a small minority believe hospital visitation rights shouldn't be extended to gay people.

CNN in putting this poll up fails to see how offensive the mere question is. Could you imagine the outrage if there was a poll allowing users to vote on another minorities basic civil rights?

Express your dissapointment with CNN over this poll by giving them feedback on their homepage.

Let Tucker Carlson Know Our Families are Not "Controversial"

Tucker Carlson in an interview on Fox & Friends discussing efforts to prevent bullying among youth through age appropriate discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity is calling books, and films about gay families a "controversial subject" and an effort to "push political propaganda." He goes on to say that there is no evidence of violence based on sexual orientation in those early grades.

We know all too well after the murder of twelve year old Lawrence King and others that hatred starts at a young age and anti-gay rhetoric is heavily prevalent among our nations youth.

Taking one day out of a year, or one segment of a lesson to teach about respect, and diversity is not "wasting time" for our kids. Would Tucker also say the same about other identities that are or were deemed "controversial" at some point?

Reading about gay penguins, Heather having two mommies, or watching It's Elementary is far from controversial, it is those who are against this that are , in the words of Mr. Carlson pushing "value judgments and political propaganda."

How ironic that Fox News brings on someone who himself is the perpetrator of anti-gay violence in the past to discuss anti-bullying methods.

O'Reilly, Miller Falsely Suggested Obama Supported Prop 8

Fox News' Bill O'Reilly and Dennis Miller falsely suggested President Obama supported California's Proposition 8. After Miller described a call to his radio show in which the caller suggested that "had [Obama] been a California resident," he "would have voted for Proposition 8," O'Reilly stated that the caller "probably listened to The Radio Factor and then called you because we had said that." In fact, Obama opposed Proposition 8.

CALL TO ACTION: Sean Delonas & The New York Post

Sean Delonas recent cartoon in the New York Post depicts police having shot and killed a chimpanzee while making reference to President Obama’s recently passed economic stimulus bill.

The cartoon has sparked widespread anger and outrage, and community leaders have coordinated ongoing protests of the New York Post.

GLAAD’s President had this to say about the controversy:

"Sean Delonas has a history of defamatory work and we stand with those who decry this recent cartoon as unacceptable and a vicious portrayal that neither enlightens nor entertains. It’s unacceptable that the New York Post continues to provide a platform for such instances of hateful defamation".

GLAAD is urging us to speak out against these bigoted cartoons which portray minorities in a negative light.

KNBC Refuses to Air 'Get To Know Us' Ads During Superbowl

Recently we reported about the Get To Know Us Ads and how they were rejected by KABC-TV.

Now Los Angeles affiliate KNBC-TV refused to air the same ads during the Superbowl citing that the NFL doesn't allow for "advocacy ads".

"Despite this policy, other advocacy ads aired multiple times throughout the day’s NFL-controlled programming. Among the advocacy ads which did air were PSAs for TobaccoFreeCA.org and DontBeAnAsterisk.org, an anti-steroids advocacy campaign" (GLAAD).

Open Letter Against Intolerance in Armenia

Homosexuality is being discussed in Armenian media and literature in the context of a threat to national security, and as a disordered identity. These attitudes only advance the notion that gays are sick and dangerous, and serves to promote a culture of violence against LGBT citizens in the country.

"Even through the general absence of any desire to ask fundamental questions about homosexuality, male homosexuality in Armenia has been consistently described as a threat to national security, a result of accepting European decadent values or a pathology and disease, while homosexual women have been denied of existence all together or condemned in not fitting into the image of a “proper” Armenian woman.

We urge all officials, politicians, journalists, teachers, doctors and all those who are engaged in public work as well as each and every individual, to get acquainted with problems that homosexual men and women face in Armenia, their socially active initiatives and to the contemporary debates around gender and sexuality."

Please leave a comment to sign the petition on the Queering Yerevan blog.

Get Fox News Out of the Bedroom!

Fox News has an article up on their front page about openly gay candidate Earl Rynerson who is campaigning to be the next mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Florida,

The "news" organization is right to bring up questions about his own fiscal problems, and other legal issues.

They have absolutely no right to promote fear based on his sexual orientation and his specific sexual practices so long as they are legal and consensual.

(Check out the news story here!)

SHAME ON FOX NEWS for gay-baiting and using fear tactics to promote their agenda.

Fox News 'Transition Tracker' Promotes Gay Fear

Fox News has come out with an article called 'Gay America Prepares to Party at Obama Inauguration' trying to once again elicit conservatives worst nightmares.

The article makes it sound like millions of LGBT activists will flood the streets and promote their agenda. They are trying to paint Obama as a "San Francisco Values" liberal, and they don't mean it in a good way.

The article goes on to quote several anti-equality organizations and their spokespeople. Including such ludicrous organizations as 'Americans For Truth About Homosexuality' run by Peter LaBarbera which is a hate group that seeks to pathologize and take away rights from LGBT people.

The mere mention, and quoting of Mr. LaBarbera is in itself un-newsworthy, and he seeks to push his agenda to insinuate that behind closed doors, there will be gay sex parties, fetish events, and more that are somehow tied to the Obama inauguration. There is a fetish event scheduled prior to the inauguration, but it is completely unrelated to the Obama celebration. The conservatives seek to paint a broad brush on the entire LGBT community in attempt to make us appear to have an alternative lifestyle of filth and perversion.

This article is another example of the divisive politics and scare tactics displayed over and over again by Fox News. Please let Fox know that this story is biased, inappropriate and factually incorrect.

Hold Fox News Accountable for Gay-Baiting

On the front page of the Fox News website there is an article titled "Sex Rights Brawl Slams Vatican." This is in reference to the recent protesting over the Vatican's decision to oppose a U.N. global decriminalization legislation which opposes imprisonment and the death penalty for gays.

This is not a "sex rights" issue, this has nothing to do with sex, people are being imprisoned and killed due to homosexuality regardless of whether they were discovered engaging in sexual relations or not. This has to do with human rights and human dignity. This has to do with right not to be imprisoned and executed based on ones identity.

Under that article is another titled:
"Vatican Sucked Into Sex-Rights Culture War" it seems Fox News has sex on their mind, even though the issue here has nothing to do with sex.

The two articles below that have zero to do with the U.N. legislation and are just further used as a fear tactic to make gays seem radical, outlandish and potentially morally reprehensible. The articles are titled "Same-Sex Marriage Backers Urge Workers to 'Call in Gay'", "Group Plans 'Pink' Christmas: Two Josephs, Two Marys."

It is wrong and unfair of Fox News to misrepresent the truth and to gay-bait.

Tell them to be "Fair & Balanced" on issues pertaining to gay rights.

Market Watch Gets Their Talking Points from "Protect Marriage"

Market Watch is a news source that serves around 6 million people who are seeking up to date financial information. They just released an extremely biased press release regarding the marriage amendment. First off the article is titled "New Poll Shows Traditional Marriage in the Lead", what exactly is "traditional marriage" polygamy, or a woman being subservient to her husband? The bible defines marriage very differently than we do today. The article gives the talking points for the Yes on 8 campain and links to the "protect marriage" website. No talking points for the opposition or a link to the No on 8 campaign.

Biased? Yes. Let them know and please use the link above to reference the article.
