London Hate Crime Vigil on Oct 30th

A candlelight vigil will take place in London's Trafalgar Square on October 30th to honor Ian Baynham a gay man who was murdered. Baynham, 62 was walking with a friend when he was attacked.

Homophobic hate crimes have been on the rise in London, just a few days after this attack a lesbian couple was attacked by a group of men. The complaints by the gay community is that little is being done to prevent homophobic hate crimes, police response is inadequate, and that the public at large needs to be made aware of whats going on.

Candlelight vigil and moment of silence:

As press liaison officer for the event I need to point out that the three people arrested have been charged with manslaughter not murder.

I'd have to disagree and say that, though hate crimes may be on the rise (though I am unaware of this fact), I believe the police and the community do their best to try and prevent them before they happen (I can't say anything about after they happen or whilst they are happening). When I'm walking around London I often see signs that say "Stop Hate Crimes" or "Police Take Notice of Hate Crimes" things to that effect. I feel very safe in London as a lesbian, much safer actually than in small town America. Do wish I'd be in town for the 30th though, that's a real bummer.

I wonder if the presence of the BNP bigot on the BBC's Question Time and the preshow publicity have played a role in the increase in hate crimes.

I'm glad I saw of this event. I don't know if I'll be able to get to London but if not I intend to hold two minutes' silence at the meeting I'll be in.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence -London chapter - will be attedning the event.
Two Saturdays ago in the Angel area, as we were manifesting , to bring the message of Universal joy and peace between the communities we got nearly assaulted by a group of 8 young people. Things were thrown at us and there was a malicious intention. We did report the incident to the Police forces and hopefully we managed to find shelter at the Victoria Miro Gallery.
