Slain LGBT civil rights hero Harvey Milk would turn 80 today if he were still alive. Now California has recognized Harvey Milk Day as an official day to recognize his impact on the movement towards equality and justice. Even though he is gone, he has left a legacy and inspired a new generation of activists to stand up, be proud, and demand full equality.

Saturday, May 22 has been officially designated Harvey Milk Day by the state of California, and would have been Harvey Milk’s 80th birthday. In February, Equality Across America put out a call to action for activists across the country to celebrate Harvey Milk's legacy and continue the demand for full federal equality. “I have tasted freedom. Governors Office Saturated With Anti-Gay Lies Regarding Harvey Milk Day Bill

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger may possibly veto the Harvey Milk Day Bill as he did last year due to outrage and opposition from religious extremists. Harvey Milk Day would honor the slain gay rights hero on May 22nd of each year, but would not force schools to shut down or celebrate the day in any way.

The governor needs to hear input from people who understand the significance of teaching about the legacy of Harvey Milk.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Seeks Input on Harvey Milk Day

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is asking for public opinion on the Harvey Milk Day bill (SB 572) which would honor the slain gay rights hero. Last year the governor under conservative pressure vetoed the bill and is facing similar pressure and scrutiny from the religious right.

Urge California Governor to Sign Harvey Milk Day Bill

Last year the California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the Harvey Milk Day bill, saying that Milk was a figure of merely local significance.

Whether you live in Palm Springs, the Central Valley, or far northern California, let the Governor know that Milk was an LGBT hero who truly changed the world and is worthy of a state day of special significance.

We haven't let last year's veto deter us, and have this year introduced SB 572, which would establish May 22 each year as Harvey Milk Day. With the film, Milk, and the help of its star Sean Penn we have great momentum, but we also need your help! David Letterman Makes Mockery Out of "Milk"

"Milk" is an important upcoming documentary about historic civil rights icon Harvey Milk. In an interview with actor James Franco on the David Letterman show, Mr. Letterman instead of focusing on the historic nature of the film or talking substance about what the movie is about, focuses on the fact that there is a kiss between the two straight men.

Below you can see the interview, and the lack of seriousness and mockery that goes on regarding an epic film that is about to be released.



"Milk" is not a comedy, it is a film about a major icon in the gay rights movement who was assassinated. The fact that David Letterman finds this to be amusing and is focused on one kissing scene that is irrelevant to the movie says more about him than it does about the film.

"After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board.

Mr. Milk had been the subject of several books and the Academy Award-winning documentary feature, The Times of Harvey Milk (1984); but Milk (2008) is the first fictional feature to explore private aspects of the man's personal life and career.

Milk was filmed on location in San Francisco. Many of Mr Milk's real-life surviving friends and former associates participated in the making of this film, several appearing on camera." (Imdb)

"Right-wing groups are once again attacking our community. This time they’re flooding the governor’s office with calls and emails, asking him to veto legislation that would honor late civil rights pioneer Harvey Milk, who was one of the first openly gay elected officials in our nation and a beacon of hope for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

AB 2567, authored by Assemblymember Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, and sponsored by Equality California, creates a day of special significance commemorating Milk’s birthday. It would add Harvey Milk Day to a list of other special days designated to commemorate those individuals and communities that have helped to further California’s legacy as a land of promise and opportunity. Milk, a San Francisco supervisor, was assassinated in 1978, along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. Both were murdered by a former city supervisor who was motivated by his fear and hatred of the forces of change and progress at San Francisco City Hall. While in office, Milk championed the first city ordinance protecting LGBT people from discrimination. He also led the fight against a discriminatory ballot initiative that would have banned all gays and lesbians from teaching in California schools.
