Colorado Senator Scott Renfroe: "Gay Sin Is Equal to Murder"

In a deliberation over whether the state of Colorado should extend health care coverage to same-sex partners of state employees, Senator Scott Renfroe (R) quoted scripture and pointed to verses that he believes are about homosexuality in his effort to encourage his colleagues to vote against the bill. He also equated homosexuality with other sins such as murder and made other offensive comments that can be seen in the audio portion on you youtube below. It is unacceptable for an elected official to make these outrageous statements and get away with them in the name of religion, when government should be a separate entity from church politics.

Use Progress Now Colorado's online form to let Scott Renfroe know what you think about his bigoted position.

And to think I wanted blog hits from Colorado (not that everyone from there is horrible). So we've got gays are equal to snipers, pig fuckers, murderers, pedophiles...did I miss anything?

I wish when they would make these crazy claims that they just stopped at gays are equal. They really don't need to finish the sentence.

It is neat how Republicans sh*t out of their mouths instead of their butts? Quite a trick!

Nauseating. And disappointing that he wasn't shouted down the second he started quoting from his preferred holy book... HEY FUCKER, the government is to represent ALL people, not just the ones your brand of hate approves of.

This is DISGUSTING! I am to a point where I don't give a damn about free speech because I believe it can be argued that fuckers like this one are inciting people to assault and possibly kill LGBTQ people.

Well, another good reason to stay the hell out of Colorado.

This is not about Colorado. It's a great state with great gay communities. It's interesting how our community, who hates stereotyping is so quick to stereotype people in Colorado. Let me remind everyone that we have worked hard to elect a democratic governor, a democratic legislature and finally, voted democratic in the recent presidential election. It was Colorado's gay community who rose up and took Amendment 2 to the Supreme Court and won years ago. This whole thing came about because Colorado is passing additional health benefits for same sex domestic partners for state employees. I believe there is going to be a grass roots to demand an apology from Scott Renfroe or demand that he resign. I hope you'll all be more supportive when that happens.

I am stunned this kind of hate is allowed to be spewed by a public official. If one of our Los Angeles officials said this, I would hope they would be ousted immediately. Separation of church and state is so essential to this nation and every day that concept is encroached on. Astonishing how much these right wing politicians get away with now. I agree that he is inciting people to violence against gays since he mentioned the Bible's supposed punishment as well as found homosexuality equivalent to murder. As stunned as I am that this hate is allowed to be spoken, I am perhaps even more surprised at the masses of people who believe it.

I am not gay or a homosexual. I want to point out to the Senator that through the rationale that he ( the Senator ) is "Justified" in bringing scripture into the State Senate to make his point, the alternative to the desired result ( Satan) has the Senator functioning as a Hand Puppet of Satan and doing his (Satan) bidding and the Senator has no understanding of how being "Justified" allows good people to be baffled and so to do very bad things while they think that they are doing good. Tsk. tsk. The road to hell is paved with good intentions....

I think it's crazy that he's quoting the bible when talking about legislature. Clearly he doesn't understand that our government system was predicated on the separation of church and state. I don't understand how people like Renfroe get to these positions of influence.

I find it interesting that a lot of the comments made on this page are not tolerant at all of other people who disagree with homosexuality. If homosexuals feel so confident in their sexual choices then why are they so intolerant of other peoples views and opinions on this matter? We live in a country that allows us to express how we think. I guess that only applies when all people agree with homosexuals. By the way,the hatred to others who don't agree with the views presented here are evident in the language used in the above posts. In other words, "your speech betrays you."
