"Same Gender Loving" or SGL for short is a term coined within the African-American LGBT community. The term is preferred because it is seen as separate and distinct from queer slang that is seen as white dominated. The term is also popular among people of color because it emphasizes emotional relationships and not just relationships purely based on sexuality.

I'm African-Canadian and I have never perceived queer slang to be white-dominated. It seems to me that this is yet another example of black LGBT folk and their unwillingness to identify as gay.
Can someone who agrees with gay slang being white dominated possibly explain? I'd genuinely like to understand this point of view if someone wouldn't mind enlightening...
The gay vs SGL issue is deeper than queer slang, or, as Bobbie put it, 'black LGBT folk's unwillingness to identify as gay'. SGL encapsulates our same gender attraction, affection, and our blackness as well (which is a distinction and an added weight which no white gay person can totally comprehend).
But it goes deeper still, and I plan to do a post all about the GAY vs SGL issue for those who wish to be enlightened.
