"Shemale" is a term mostly used as a slur against transgender, and pre-operative transsexuals. A "shemale" is a biological male who has gone through partial transition to present as female. They usually have breasts but still maintain male genitalia. The term rarely but sometimes is used to describe intersex people as well. As with other reclaimed words, "shemale" has been used by some trans people as a form of self-empowerment.

It's very rare and the only time I have ever heard it when someone confused me with a shemale and a transgender. They didn't know I am intersex.
How did you feel when called a Shemale Nick? Do you find it insulting, empowering, just another word?
I felt pissed because someone accused me, an intersex person of being a shemale when I am not even one of them. I felt more pissed because someone thought that intersex had something in common with being transgender and equate the two.
I understand, I feel the word shemale is still offensive to trans and intersex folks. I don't like the word nor do I use it. I guess time will tell if it makes a comeback like the words "queer" "dyke" and "tranny"
I felt pissed when someone in society, puts me an intersex person in the same category as with the transgender. It's well obvious that society still confuses intersex with transgender and it's more obvious that people still think that intersex and transgender are the same thing
It is obvious to me that most people, including most intersex people, still hate transgender people.
Lea - I don't know if I would use the word "hate" but certainly most people don't understood and hold ill conceived notions and ideas about trans people.
I can't look at that amount of violence and call it anything but hatred.
Lea - I think it depends on the context, if a trans person or ally says it, it is prob not violent but if a trans-basher says it than it is.
