Open Forum: Butch or Femme?

The queer community has been known to showcase a variety of characteristics; among those being butch, femme, or neither. Are there masculine or feminine aspects to your personality, identity, physical appearance, or the dynamics of your relationships?

Word of the Gay: "Bull"

A "bull" is an aggressive lesbian and is short for bulldyke or bulldagger.

Word of the Gay: "Straight Acting"

"Straight Acting" is when a gay person is not exhibiting any mannerisms that appear to fit an LGBTQ stereotype. For example a gay man who tries to fit in by avoiding seeming effeminate, or a lesbian who tries to avoid seeming overtly masculine.

Word of the Gay: "Butch as Kong"

"Butch as Kong" is an expression for a burly, muscular, hulking gay man or lesbian.

When butches and femmes ruled the lesbian bar scene, "kikis" was a derogatory term for those who didn't fit into one of those categories.

A "stone butch" is a woman who is strongly masculine in her personality and style. A "stone butch" is generally the more aggressive partner in the relationship, and the one who wears the pants.

A "stromo" is a gay man who has the style and demeanor associated with straight males. It is the opposite of a metrosexual.

Word of the Gay: "Chapstick Lesbian"

A "chapstick lesbian" is a woman who exhibits some masculine traits but does not fully fit the role of a butch woman. Some expressions of a "chapstick lesbian" may include but are not limited to short hair, male clothes, and a masculine attitude.

A "stem" is a term used to describe lesbian or bisexual women who fall somewhere in between stud and femme.

Too Butch for Primetime!

It appears the television network MSNBC is presenting the LGBT community a double edged sword this evening. Rachel Maddow openly lesbian political commentator is getting a prime time slot to air her progressive ideological viewpoint. This is great not only as a way for members of our community to be in the public spotlight but also to take on the neo-cons ie: Pat Buchanan and the like who are anti-gay.

Here is the problem...

"MSNBC loves the chatter of liberal pundit Rachel Maddow, but not her look. Maddow, who's getting her own show, is being subjected to a network makeover. A source says an entire "glam squad" has been hired for the openly gay Maddow, and she has been asked not to wear her Drew Carey-esque glasses again. There's even talk of "putting her in a skirt." We're sure that'll do the trick. A rep for the channel didn't return e-mails."

There has been speculation all over the place. Some are suggesting this is an attempt by the NY Post (owned by Rupert Murdoch of Fox News) to damage MSNBC. Politely message MSNBC making sure Rachel Maddow can present as she likes and let them clarify what their position is.
