A "significant other" is an individual who is regarded as special in anothers life, it could be their romantic and/or sexual partner or a close friend. The term is ambiguous which makes it applicable for all all orientations and gender identities.

I hardly ever hear this term being used to describe very many heterosexual relationships, but I hear it more so with other types of relationships such as homosexual, bisexual, and transgender to describe the 'special' person in their lives.
I sometimes use this term depending on who I'm in the company of, but mostly when I'm purposely trying to be ambiguous. Most other times, I consider her my womyn, my gyrlfriend, my honey, my love bunny, or my studsband. This makes it perfectly clear that she is my 'significant other' without the ambiguity.
I personally wouldn't use the term, it is just too ambiguous for my liking, but I am glad its there for those who prefer it.
I love that term.... so all encompassing! So perfect!
We have men use that term in the DV groups I facilitate, so it can be general and respectful. Some of them balk at the term because it sounds "gay." We don't let them off that hook!
