I agree with LindaMarie, I can understand the need to try to make their words our own... But people really don't think outside of that box, what about the LGBT people who are actually offended by such words and do not wish to be called as such?
Using such words to describe ones self gives the impression to other people that it is okay to use those words thus creating discrimination against those who find those words HIGHLY offensive. Even "Queer" is pushing it, but "Fag" is just unacceptable...
giving off or showing animosity towards the (other side)as I refer to it as... only gives off contempt...and in the wrong manner fuels that much more anger towards us...as a community, the individual may have an issue, but NO NEED to advertise His contempt,at the expense of the rest of community who may suffer for it.
I just don't agree with such representations!
There is no need to use words such as "F**k" or "Fag". I guess gays should be nice. Then people eventually will realize this fact. I always think of the word "gay" as connotation for "nice".
It's attitudes like that which keep words like "fag" derogatory. Why not reclaim it? African-Americans have made efforts to reclaim the word "Nigger". Inga Muscio took on the word "Cunt" in her book of the same name.
Also one of the people I admire is Margaret Cho. She uses the word too and she is a gay icon. One of her lines from I'm the One I Want is: "I love the word fag because it describes my kind of guy."
I do not believe in giving words power over me and I am going to stick to it.
"The Angry Fag" African Americans made an effort to "reclaim" it, but in all honesty if you still use it today it is an insult unless you are a member of that same race, and even then you can easily offend other people of the same race.
Their "reclaim" attempts did nothing more than create a double standard for those who were, and for those who were not. Where you can call someone "Nigger" and it have a negative impression on both sides. The "reclaiming" accomplished absolutely nothing but confusion and pointlessness.
On another note, the word "reclaim" is inaccurate seeing as how we never claimed the word as our own to begin with. It was them who began that terminology.
