Equal Taxes. Equal Rights 4.15.09

On April 15th in dozens of cities across the U.S. LGBT people and allies will protest the inequality in our tax system at post offices throughout the nation. Our loved ones are treated like legal strangers and denied the economic protections given to our heterosexual counterparts.

Sign up, find organizing tools, and more at Tax Day 2009!

Don't forget that Lambda Legal recommends that married same-sex couples submit an addendum with their federal tax return that says that they are filing as single individuals only because federal law does not recognize the marriage performed in their state. Apparently your federal filing status can be used against you if someone ever wants to challenge the legitimacy of your marriage (such is in a will contest or if an employer does not want to extend benefits to your spouse).

Why "protest"? We have EVERY REASON to REVOLT. Some Beck-Limbaugh types have a quibble about the politics of spending they start a "tax revolt".

Our GLBT families AND children are SUB-American in Federal Law; we suffer NEEDLESSLY in times of crisis, disease, and death due to our legal exclusion from FAMILY LAW.

My biggest fear is that my own Q community lacks the COLLECTIVE (collective) DIGNITY to stand up and demand, not ask, but DEMAND this Family Right - MARRIAGE - along with Federal Equality. [ "hello....we have kids too" ] My community is still waving signs, writing letters, calling, begging ,pleading, beseeching, and grovelling for this right as if we do NOT ALREADY deserve it as taxpaying Americans. Can one REALLY have DIGNITY when grovelling?

We GAVE AWAY our power and enabled the persecutors with PROP 8. It is REVOLTING that we are NOT revolting.
