Leave the coats and handbags behind...

October 11, National Coming Out Day……ahh the memories. I read an article the other day asking if National Coming Out Day is even needed anymore because compared to previous years, sexual orientation is so much more out in the open and accepted now. Well let’s see, until I can enjoy all the legal benefits of marriage, teens don’t have to put up with abuse and bullshit in school (from the adults), all the Matthew Shepards are safe, Daniel Choi and a myriad of others can continue to serve this country with honor and distinction without fear, boys can cry and DOMA/DADT are banished into the dark ages where they belong…yeah we need to keep National Coming Out Day.

Until I don’t have to read one more lame ass, bigoted hateful, hurtful quote from the likes of Geraldo Rivera (after President Obama’s HRC speech 10/10/09)) that “Matthew Shepard was killed because he was gay…apparently” National Coming Out Day is needed. Oh and Geraldo is an ASSHOLE…obviously.

You know, I’m 40 now and it’s so funny to look back on my “formative years”. The closet was so familiar and comfy. For me, there was no grand epiphany inspiring me to come out, no fateful incident that forced my hand. I simply outgrew my closet. I fell in love, got dumped, fell in love again, made friends, discovered bar life (God your 20’s are grand!) read Ruby Fruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown, saw Desert Hearts for the first time and finally got Personal Best. Life experience has a way of leaving you wanting more, not quenching your thirst . That comfy little closet just wasn’t meant to last forever. Now I have a more seasoned, sophisticated view of life, or as I like to call it a “Fuck it if y’all don’t like it” attitude.

The fight goes on to be ourselves, love who we love, raise our kids, pay our bills and well you get the picture….just live our fuckin lives like everyone else.

Happy Coming Out Day, make us proud!

Shameless self promotion? Sure why not. Here's a link to a blog entry I made about a shonen-ai themed anime music video I made last year and its interesting viewer stats on YouTube. http://www.bluezhift.proliphuscore.com/?p=689
