Vermont Marriage Bill Headed for Senate!

The Senate Judiciary Committee in Vermont has approved the same-sex marriage bill S.115 by a 5-0 margin. The bill is expected to come before the entire senate for a vote on Monday 3/23 at 3:00PM.

This is our last opportunity to voice our support for the measure before the senate is set to vote on the matter.

Yes On Equality - 2010 Marriage Equality Initiative!

The new 'Yes on Equality' campaign has learned from the mistakes of the prop 8 battle, the protests, etc. They are starting early with their campaign to put an initiative on the 2010 ballot to legalize same-sex marriage in California. The group has an online petition, and will be working hard to mobilize people to overturn prop 8.

The California Supreme Court will hear oral arguments from both sides of the proposition 8 debate today at 9 am PST. The court must issue a ruling within 90 days, but word has it the decision may come as early as today.

Nepal's Highest Court Grants Full Rights to LGBTI Citizens

The highest court in Nepal has issued a ruling granting full rights to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersexual citizens.


The final judgement was issued today.

"It reiterates that all LGBTIs are defined as a "natural person" and their physical growth as well as sexual orientation, gender identity, expression are all part of natural growing process. Thus equal rights, identity and expression must be ensured regardless of their sex at birth."(Pink News)

Furthermore, the court has instructed a study into countries which have same-sex marriage practice and has ordered the legislature to introduce a bill putting forth full marriage equality which is expected to pass.

Open Forum: Constitutional Amendment Allowing SSM?

We are always fighting off propositions to have constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage. In many locales voters have voted to define marriage as between one man and one woman within their state constitutions.

What about a fight to amend the state constitutions to allow for marriage equality? If it loses, we lose nothing. If it wins it would be unprecedented and make world history. It would be the first time voters decided to grant marriage rights to all couples.

Do you think this could work anywhere, if so, where? Why aren't there efforts by pro-equality forces engaging in these tactics? Is there a state or country where voters are most likely to vote to approve same-sex marriage and on what basis?

Counter the Lies & Myths Regarding Marriage Equality in California

Our opponents are preparing to get their voter referendum passed this election day which will effectively reverse the court ruling and write that "marriage can only be between one man and one woman" into the California state constitution. They are spreading a campaign of lies and misinformation about marriage equality.

It's important to correct these misrepresentations and be equipped with the knowledge of the facts...

"MYTH #1: Churches in California will be forced to perform same-sex marriages, even if they don't want to.

FACT: No church will ever have to perform any marriage it disapproves of. That's protected in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and will never change.

MYTH #2: County clerks can pick and choose which marriages they officiate.

FACT: Unlike religious leaders, county clerks are civic officials who are required to administer the law without discriminating. A civil marriage isn't a religious ceremony -- it's a legal contract. County clerks need to perform an official government duties.

MYTH #3: The Supreme Court shouldn't have done this!

FACT: The state Constitution requires equality under the law for all Californians, and the justices on the Court had an obligation to stand up for that principle. Throughout American history, courts have stood up for those who couldn't defend their rights any other way. Those decisions were often unpopular, but now we look back on them proudly.

MYTH #4: This is bad for marriage.

FACT: This is great for marriage! When two people love each other and want to make a lifelong commitment to care for and be responsible for each other, they should be able to get married. Starting today, marriage will be stronger, not weaker. Stopping some people from getting married doesn't help anyone's marriage -- it only hurts those who are discriminated against and their families.

As Election Day draws closer, no doubt we'll see more misrepresentations and half-truths from anti-gay organizations. We'll be working with our allies to be sure the truth is told."

Activist Tip: Tell Your Friends/Acquaintances to Vote NO!

Okay this will take a few minutes of your time and can make all the difference! Open your address book, your facebook, myspace, or any social networking website you have. Do a regional search and find those in states with anti-gay referendums and tell them from your heart why they should vote against those ballots. Studies show someone who knows someone LGBT or an ally is much more likely to side with equality.

So tell your friends in California to vote NO on proposition 8 which eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Tell your friends in Arizona to vote NO on proposition 102 which bans same-sex marriage, it already is illegal in Arizona!

Tell Floridians to vote NO on proposition 2 which eliminates same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships (even for heterosexual couples).

Tell those in Connecticut to vote NO on initiative 1 which brings into session a constitutional convention.
