Rep. Steve Rothman Joins the Equality Bandwagon

New Jersey Democratic congressman Steve Rothman who previously did not support same-sex marriage has made an about face and now supports equal marriage rights. He has made this decision in light of his lesbian step-daughter.

Mr. Rothman has also joined the newly formed LGBT Caucus within the House of Representatives.

Please take the time to thank Representative Rothman for supporting Marriage Equality and joining the LGBT Caucus and let him know that you appreciate his commitment to equality.

Isn't it amazing how much more difficult it is to discriminate once you put a "face" with a certain population... especially a family member or friend. (That isn't true across the board of course... doesn't help my ex husband be any kinder to me...) This is a wonderful story!

bridgeout I think coming out is the most effective political weapon.

I think in the case of your ex-husband religion is playing a strong role, which makes it so much harder. I hope he comes around though.

It's nice to know that he has changed his views on queer people. But changing his view once his daughter came out?

That seems a bit selfish.

I hate to look like a pessimistic because I really am glad he changed his views on queer people.

your preset it is selfish, but hey we will take equality in whatever form it comes right?

I'm glad another politician is on board. NJ gives a little more permission than many states. I just wish it didn't take an "out" family member or loved one to convince people that gays deserve equal rights, too.

Regardless, inch by inch, the change is coming! Rah!

Please refer back to May 30th post about Gov Paterson. I recently left a comment there, quoting a wonderful letter I received from him after I sent an e-mail thanking him for his decision (as suggested by this blog.) I want to share it with all.

Larry I went back and read his response to you. Doesn't he rock? He is such a nice guy! It is nice to know we have allies in our fight.

Dear Q.U. Nice to hear from you... yes, the Gov has "VISION!" and he is yet another step toward the "equality" we seek! Love to all!

It is like I always figured. Until one is faced with a family member being gay, only then will they choose to understand. Which is wrong.

He does not deserve special recognition because 'all of a sudden' he changed his opinion.

He should be Thanking those who never gave up supporting he who did not support our lifestyle.
