Word of the Gay: "Non-sexual"

"Non-sexual" is a term for not having or not being involved with sex and sexuality. It can apply to asexuals or people who for various reasons choose to disengage from sexuality.

On asexuality.org, I've read about some asexuals who prefer to use the term non-sexual when explaining things to people. I'm not sure that I like that graphic so much, though. It seems ambiguous between "no sex (for me)" and "no sex (for anyone.)" I guess the latter reading makes is seem more anti-sexual than non-sexual. But I'm sure other people could interpret it differently.

Pretzel - I see your point, I guess I just thought of the image as for the individual who chooses to abstain, and not necessarily a worldview of being anti-sex.

That seems to be a reasonable way to interpret it.

As a member of AVEN, From what I understand about the term, Non-sexual can encompass both those who abstain from sex because of biology (Asexuality) and those who abstain because of choice (Celibacy)

An Umbrella term, like the "T" in GLTB can be an umbrella for Transgendered, Transexual, Drag, Cross-Dressers and Genderqueer.

Nicholas - Thanks for sharing that, I didn't know that non-sexual was being thought of as an umbrella word, that is pretty neat.
